Lunch with the FT: Barry Diller
Over a personalised meal in New York, the media mogul talks about surviving the 1970s, making movies, the art of reinvention and why Rupert Murdoch stands out from the conglomerate crowd
He has been responsible for some of the key moments that have shaped the US media landscape. While in charge of programming at ABC in the late 1960s, Diller introduced the TV “movie of the week”, giving a new generation of directors (including a certain Steven Spielberg, with Duel) a chance to shine. In the mid-1970s, he was appointed chairman of the then struggling Paramount Pictures and restored sheen to the studio with movies such as Saturday Night Fever, Grease and Raiders of the Lost Ark, as well as small-screen hits such as Taxi and Cheers. Moving to 20th Century Fox in the 1980s, he launched Fox, America’s first new broadcast network for decades, inadvertently turning Rupert Murdoch into a broadcasting force. He also gave the go-ahead to The Simpsons (“my absolute favourite”). A pioneer of interactive television, in the early 1990s he bought (and sold) the home shopping network QVC, before returning to movies to run Universal, when the studio and theme parks group was owned by the French conglomerate Vivendi.

In recent years, the Kremlin has made much use of information warfare, gaining support in the West from nostalgic communist fellow travelers, the rising far-right and conspiracy theorists. The rebranding today of the international branches of Russia’s state-owned Rossiya Segodnya (Russia Today) news group as Sputnik International speaks of the Kremlin’s intent to influence and manipulate opinion abroad. Russian state-owned or state-controlled media also serve to distribute disinformation, including outright lies, as best exemplified by fabricated reports of the crucifixion of a child by Ukrainian forces.

Russia after Nemtsov
The assassination of Mr Nemtsov, who had served in the government of Boris Yeltsin and even been groomed as his potential successor (see article), has shaken many members of the political elite. It breaks an unwritten pact, agreed after Stalin’s death, that conflicts at the top should be resolved by non-violent means. Those who are still close to the Kremlin and consider themselves liberals now choose their words carefully. Alexei Kudrin, a former finance minister who sponsors civic projects, told TV Rain, a liberal internet-based television channel, that this was a “dramatic page in Russia’s history…in modern, political Russia we see an opponent being stopped by a bullet. This is a new and inadmissible reality and it concerns all of us.” No government officials, including Dmitry Medvedev, the prime minister, spoke out.

The Nemtsov murder fits into a pattern of recent lawless Russian actions. In the past year, Russia has forcibly annexed Crimea, part of a neighbouring country. It has provided weapons to rebels in eastern Ukraine, who then shot down a civilian airliner killing 298 people. It has broken diplomatic deals and violated ceasefires. It has flaunted its nuclear arsenal and has flown nuclear bombers over the English Channel. Those Russians brave enough to protest have been vilified — and now murdered.

Any plot against Boris Nemtsov would have been known by the Kremlin. Putin either killed him or tolerated his death. Vladimir Putin has ruled Russia with three things: money, propaganda and terror. When the Russian economy was booming and the oil price was over $100 a barrel, Putin ruled Russia almost entirely with money – throwing cash at the elites and at the people – with a small dose of propaganda and a tiny injection here and there of terror. Ukraine’s economy - The day of reckoning
Default would be embarrassing for the government, but things cannot get much worse for ordinary Ukrainians. By the end of the year they are likely to be a third poorer than when the Soviet Union collapsed. Inflation is 29% and will get much higher thanks to the hryvnia’s slump. To tame inflation and support the currency, interest rates, already 20%, will rise further. That will make it more difficult to repay loans. Added to all that is government austerity, on which the IMF is insisting. By 2017 domestic gas prices will have increased to five times the level of 2013. The government is freezing pensions. With such high inflation, that amounts to a substantial cut. Even if the war stopped tomorrow, there would be a lot more pain to come.
